Curling 101

Curling is a sport that combines strategy, skill, and teamwork in a fun and welcoming environment. Two teams take turns sliding stones toward a target, with the goal of finishing closer to the centre than their opponents.

What makes curling special is that anyone can learn to play. New curlers can quickly begin enjoying the game, while experienced players continue to develop their skills and strategies over a lifetime.

Known for its sportsmanship and friendly culture, curling brings people together both on and off the ice. It's a sport where competition and camaraderie go hand in hand.

If you've never tried curling before, don't worry. Every curler was once a beginner, and we'd be happy to help you get started

About Curling

Begin each game by greeting your opponents with a handshake, introducing yourself, and wishing them “Good Curling.”

At the conclusion of the game, shake hands with all players and thank them for the match. A long-standing curling tradition is for the winning team to offer refreshments to their opponents. In curling, sportsmanship and fellowship are valued just as much as the final score.

Use the boot cleaner before entering the clubhouse and always change into clean curling shoes before stepping onto the ice. Dirt, sand, and grit can damage the ice surface and affect play. Curling shoes should be used only for curling and kept as clean as possible.

Respect your opponents and acknowledge good shots, regardless of which team made them. Good sportsmanship is one of the foundations of the game.

Be ready to play. As soon as your opponent delivers their stone, prepare for your turn. Prompt play helps keep games moving smoothly and ensures everyone enjoys their time on the ice.

Sweepers should be ready to begin sweeping immediately after a teammate releases a stone.

After delivering your stone, move to the side of the sheet between the hog lines unless you are the skip. Leads and seconds should not enter the house except while sweeping or helping remove stones after the score has been determined.

Avoid distracting the player in the hack. Players who are not actively involved in the shot should remain quietly to the side between the hog lines.

To help maintain the pace of play, place the skip's stone in front of the hack before it is their turn to throw.

Be mindful of game pace. All games should progress at roughly the same speed. If your game falls behind the others, work together to keep play moving. Players should be prepared to throw when the skip has called the shot and positioned the broom.

Most importantly, remember that curling is built on respect, integrity, and camaraderie. Treat opponents, teammates, officials, volunteers, and facility staff with courtesy both on and off the ice.
